We’re charging headfirst into Year 4 of this pandemic, and from where the PAI is sitting, the situation has rapidly devolved. The data’s been sabotaged, disease prevention has been essentially abandoned, and we’re seeing a whole smorgasbord of chronic health problems emerge on a population level, upending lives. Public-facing “experts” from Leana Wen to Bonnie Henry have essentially abandoned any sort of responsibility to accurately inform and serve the public. All the while, Nurgle-worshipping plague rats infect the discourse with increasingly more and more unhinged fiction and declarations based in delusion and selfishness.
If you’re reading this, you’re likely someone who continues to take the ongoing pandemic seriously. Good! Maybe you’ve been hyper-vigilant (and a little bit lucky) since the beginning, and never had COVID. Or you’ve come down with Long COVID and are struggling to find answers. Maybe you volunteered for a clinical trial related to new COVID vaccines and treatments. Perhaps you’re a working clinician who would like some more public pushback against outright bullshit artists sabotaging the work of you and your colleagues to save and protect lives. This, and the countless other stories that have been written in the lives of people struggling to soldier on through a 100-year pandemic event, is the history being written through our actions today. Your continued vigilance and activism will be remembered when the textbooks are written, and future generations wonder how we navigated this disaster.
There’s been a growing wave of pushback against public health activists, those who are still masking or modifying their behavior to avoid infection and reinfection with a new and yet to be fully understood pathogen that has killed and disabled millions in an incredibly explosive global debut. You’ve possibly experienced some of this already in your own life - weird comments on why you’re still masking, or what have you, and you might just be wavering - as any human being suffering through an unprecedented national crisis would.
Go ahead and pour yourself a snifter, put some Low Roar on, and let’s take a look at the situation on the ground to determine our best course forward.
